Answer:
You won't get rich being a massage therapist unless you are willing to relocate to a major resort city. In urban areas, massage therapists can make a living. You can charge from $60-$125/hr, but you have to allow 1 hour of non-massage work such as laundry and record-keeping for each hour of massage. That is, a "full-time" massage therapist usually does about 20 massages/week. This may be different if you work from a spa or salon, you might do more massage and less paperwork in that setting. In rural areas, you will mostly need another job to survive. These assessments are for private practice, working for a chiropractor or salon can be different, but varies from area to area. There are all kinds of massage you can do including sports massage, Swedish massage, medical massage, energy therapy, etc. Massage school is just a beginning. You will want to learn other therapies such as craniosacral therapy, neuromuscular therapy, Trager work, and endless etc, in order to attract clients, so plan time and money for your continuing education. You also have to take a certain number of "continuing education" credits to maintain your license after you start practicing.Below are links, one is to a national massage therapists professional organization, the other to a search site for massage schools. You will need to get nationally certified. After you complete the required number of hours at massage school, you take a certification exam. Some states still have their own exam, but the National Certification is accepted in all states.Best of Luck!!
